Week 1:
Storytelling

“The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings–Maya Angelo
Storytelling & You Are Your Verbs
Fireside Chat:
Sharing your favorites and making connections through storytelling and “You Are Your Verbs” supported through YouTube exploration: Maysoon Zahid’s TedX.
Week one begins with a round-robin of introductions for campers and the camp team. Explorations of passions and favorites supported with input from the ‘pack for camp’ pre-camp application and registration process provide content to facilitate camp esprit de corp through identification of camper interest alignment and uniqueness discovery.
A storytelling-led discussion was presented to help campers and staff understand that we build relationships through connection and how storytelling and interest inventory can facilitate that connection. Techniques of asking and answering follow-up questions highlighted skill development in storytelling and connection. Similarly, a presentation on understanding the value of your verbs over your nouns contributed to skills inventory and discovery.
Cabin Workshop:
Campers attended two workshops. Campers were assigned to cabins led by “Peer Mentors”. Each peer mentor led their cabin campers in the creation of a cabin name and/or
mascot. A facilitated workshop introduced “Slack” as the camp communications platform for peer connection during and between camp events as well as to prepare for the Camp NetWorx! MyCube image/photo collection and sharing tool.
